Red Gate Woods | 2013 - 14
Located within Red Gate Woods (Lamount, IL) is Site A, the final resting place of the world’s first nuclear reactor and the former rally point for a local motorcycle club. The ground is littered with broken tiles, bricks and beer bottles through which prairie grasses spring. Nearby Plot M is open to visitors and is marked with a large monument that reads, “CAUTION-DO NOT DIG Buried in this area is radioactive material from nuclear research conducted here 1945-1949. Burial area is marked by six corner markers 100ft from this center point. There is no danger to visitors. U.S. Department of Energy 1978.” It should be noted that someone has scratched out the word, “No.”
